Anatomy: Structure & Function

The auricle is the visible part of the outer ear. It consists of floppy, oval irregular shaped cartilage tightly covered with skin. It acts like a cupped hand to focus the sound waves into the ear hole (external auditory canal).

The skin of the outer part of the external auditory canal has hairs and glands which produce wax and oils. The canal is about 1 inch/2.5 cm long and ends at the ear drum (tympanic membrane). It collects and directs the sound wave energy to move the ear drum, which is a thin, flexible transparent membrane resembling cling-film stretched over a small hoop.

Accurate diagnosis is absolutely essential for determining the possible treatment options and the optimum solution for each individual patient. The Harley Street ENT Clinic has a highly professional medical team of specialist doctors, audiologists, scientists, ENT practice nurses and therapists who can carry out the complete range of hearing tests which may be required for detailed assessment of each patient’s ear problem. Many of these tests are available at the time of the consultation with the specialist. This allows the patient to receive as much medical information about their condition and as efficiently as possible. However, some more sophisticated tests may require a second visit.
